1942 Harley-Davidson XA Military

The 1942 Harley-Davidson XA was a rare and innovative motorcycle developed during World War II for the U.S. Army. Designed in response to military requests for a bike suited to harsh desert conditions, the XA drew heavy inspiration from the German BMW R71, featuring a flat-twin, horizontally opposed 45-cubic-inch engine and shaft drive—both departures from Harley’s traditional V-twin and chain drive designs. The flat-twin engine allowed for better cooling, and the shaft drive was more reliable and maintenance-free in rugged terrain. Only around 1,000 units were produced before the military shifted its focus to the more versatile Jeep, making the XA a unique and highly collectible piece of Harley-Davidson history.
